After church, my mother would invite her closes friends to celebrate the birth of Christ by feasting together until the early morning hours. That tradation I hope to past on for a life time to my our family & grandkids to come.

A couple of days before Christmas, we put up a little two person tent by the Christmas tree and let the kids ” camp out” under the tree.

We go to a service in the town square and then go home to open one gift and watch the TV Yule log screensaver. Fantastic Christmas Eve tradition, lol

  8. Ashley says

No matter where we live we still go home for Christmas. We all meet at my moms and the kids grandma on christmas day and open presents and then eat a big feast thats just like thanksgiving only with ham not turkey and then the adults do a chinese gift exchange rather than buy every adult a present. we love to spend time together and watch the kids play with there toys. Dont forget christmas eve, we go to my grandmas and the kids great grandmas and do the same thing as christmas with our extended family on my moms side but we also take family pictures every year which is super cool to see how everyone changes. On Christmas day after all has settled we have a birthday party in the evening where we eat cake and watch my dad open his gifts which have to be in birthday paper because it is also his birthday. I cant wait to spend time with my family :) :)

  9. Molly Yocum says

We have a lot of family traditions that surround Christmas! Baking Christmas cookies for family/friends, Lefse on Christmas, Christmas Eve with the IL’s and Christmas afternoon with my parents, and on and on!

Our Christmas tradition is getting together on Christmas Eve and eating a variety of snack foods. This was something that my great grandma did and has kept going even after she passed away.

On Christmas Eve, we open up our traditional gift (new christmas pjs) and then we make and decorate sugar cookies together in preparation for Santa! :)

  15. Roxanne Nelson says

Trying to start some new traditions this year, but every year we put up an advent tree that my dad made for me before I got married. We had one when I was growing up and me and my sister would always race into the kitchen to see who could get the ornament on first. We now have one at our house and now I let my 6 year old put the ornament on.

  16. Christie says

As a child my parents always let us have a small gift on the day we got out of school early for Christmas break and now that I have 2 children we have continued that tradition with them ? It gives them something to look forward to & get excited about even if it is just a stocking stuffer

  17. Sue says

One tradition I have is that everyone in the family gets a store bought ornament each year in their stocking. We also make ornaments of the kids each year with pictures on them (I still have mine with pics from the early 70s) Our tree is definitely getting overloaded but I want the kids to have a bunch for their own trees when they leave home.

  18. Allie says

Our Christmas tradition is to have a big lunch at my Mimi’s house on Christmas day and then all the kids 18 and under hand out all the presents to the adults…it takes about an hour to do this since we have such a big family but it is just so relaxing to sit around with family looking at this room absolutely full of presents and just get to spend quality time with one another. :)

  19. Crystal says

Christmas is our favorite time of year! We have so many traditions from cookies and movies with the family to the elf on a shelf to driving around looking at lights! My favorite may have to be putting the nativity scene up while decorating and I tell my children the story of Jesus’ birth; can’t forget the real reason for the season! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  20. Jennifer says

My family tradition is every Christmas eve we read the story of how Christ was born to remember the true reason of the season and then set out cookies and milk for santa and carrot for the reindeers and fall asleep watching the Christmas story :)

  21. Dawn says

I’m most excited about the new tradition my daughter and I are starting this year—the 25 days of Christmas. We are a little short on cash this year due to me being basically unemployed and I am taking the opportunity to help my daughter understand the true spirit of Christmas by doing more for others….today she got a nativity to remember Jesus is the reason for the season. We are spending family time, or doing for others for some of the days too…..

  22. Traci says

My family has started a new tradition…making handmade ornaments to give as gifts to family member and for us to put on our Christmas tree! My son loves it and the memories we make are priceless!

  23. Teresa F says

We always drive an hour west of our town to ride a real steam train that re enacts the Polar Express. It is amazing and my four boys look forward to it every year. Thank you

  24. Courtney W says

It’s my son’s first Christmas. He is 3.5 months old. We put the tree up today and just enjoyed it. He smiled and laughed the whole time. I’m hoping he won’t outgrow this new tradition for a very long time :)

  25. Ginny Willis says

Each Christmas morning we all get up and instead of rushing down to open gifts we pass the Bible around and each read a few verses that tell about the birth of Jesus. It helps us remember the most important gift ever given. It is so special because as my girls have grown they have begun to join in on the reading. We have video of them when they first learned to read til now at ages 9 and 11 :) Then they get to tear into their presents!

  26. annie says

Every year my mom hosts a Cookie Party. Each guest is asked to bring 2 dozen cookies (and to be creative ;)!) we serve cider, hot chocolate, and there are so, so many different kinds of tasty treats! It’s a Cooke potluck! It’s a lot of fun and you get to try a little bit of everything. People over te years have brought super cute and creative treats. It’s my favorite tradition!

  27. Jennifer Peaslee says

One of our traditions is to go to a tree farm and cut our own Christmas tree. We then get one nice ornament each (each year)…then come home and decorate!

  28. Stephanie says

My family is new ( hubby and I) but our traditions started last year. We moved into our brand new home we had built 2 days before Christmas. SO we didnt have time to buy a tree ( and were broke lol) but i had this little pink tree from our apartment, so we put that up and that was our tree. Now this year, I have it up in the same spot on a table ( to keep kittens from demolishing it) as our tree. It even has our first home ornament ( that our sweet neighbors got us last year) as well as our first christmas together ornament on it :)

We don’t have a huge family to celebrate with so rather than sit at home Christmas night we go out to eat at a restaurant. It’s nice to get all fancied up and have a big dinner out that mom doesn’t have to cook!

  31. Stephanie says

We love to go cut down our Christmas tree and then sit in the back of grandpops pick up truck with the tree while eating donuts and drinking hot chocolate.

  32. Kelly Wright says

We LOVE to go see all of the Christmas lights around town. Another tradition is bringing Santa and a Secret Shop to our school. We are a Title 1 school with 77% of our students on the free lunch program. I cannot express the joy of watching these children shop for their families. We make sure everyone who comes leaves with a present for their family members. I actually think it is the best gift I receive!

  33. Teresa Pike says

I would be honored to have the Khols cash. I could use it for a family I am helping out for Christmas! The mom is unemployed with her unemployment check that is no longer providing and the father is disabled. They have five children. Every little bit would help! Thanks for the chance!

  34. crystal chapman says

We cook a big meal on christmas eve, but have fancy specialty foods on Christmas day (it’s my husband’s birthday as well and this is his request.) I can’t complain because no rushing and cooking on Christmas equals more time for family. :)

  35. Jennifer S says

Every year my family has a grab bag gift exchange but it can not be store bought, it must be homemade. Everyone brings an appetizer or dessert to share and we open our gifts on Christmas Eve. It is great that everyone actually has to put thought to the gifts and it has a true meaning. I enjoy those more than any other gift.

  36. Amanda Marksbury says

We don’t have a huge family to celebrate with so rather than sit at home Christmas night we always get together with one of my husbands coworkers who’s family lives out of town and do a dinner at a local restaurant. It’s nice to get all fancied up and have a big dinner out that mom doesn’t have to cook!

  37. says

We hide a pickle ornament on the tree each year. Whoever finds the pickle gets an extra gift. This is the first year my mom had a special ornament for my son who is 20 months. He was able to experience his first pickle finding this year! It was fun! ( we celebrated at Thanksgiving )

  38. Stephanie says

Our fav tradition is one that we just decided to start this yr…each night we are taking a homemade Christmas card and a package of candy canes to each neighbor :) Who knows, maybe we will reach the entire neighborhood! Love family time and cant wait to continue this tradition next yr!

  39. Tiffany Fox says

My favorite tradition is baking for all of our family and friends for a little sweet gift of the season for all. I can’t wait to be back in my kitchen again – this year is our first with a grandbaby. :D

  40. valerie says

One of our family traditions is getting together at exactly 10pm and sharing one of our great moments with each other. We usually spend about a good hour or two sharing before we open up gifts :)

  41. Angel H says

It has become a tradition for me to stay at my parents’ on Christmas Eve, wake up before my little bro and sister (6 and 5 years old), and shower so I can look halfway decent before they bring out the camera to take pictures of the kids opening their gifts!

  44. Melissa Williams says

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is one that my family adopted the year that my son was born (he is now 4). Every December we go to our local nursing home and adopt 2-3 residents for Christmas. So many of the elderly living in nursing homes don’t have any family and have very little personal belongings. We find out from the staff who is the most needy and what size clothing they wear or if there is anything else in particular that they need. We then go a few days before Christmas and deliver their gifts and a little treat that we’ve made. The happiness and gratitude that has been shown to us by them is a gift that I treasure all year long. I think it’s important to teach our children at a young age the importance of selfless and random acts of kindness :)

  45. Melissa Lindsey says

I ahve 5 kids and we play a game with the story of the night before Christmas with left and right all through the story. The kids pass around the wrapped gifts when the story says left or right and the keep the one that they end up with. Inside the gifts are different board games that we play together as a family.

  46. Shelby E says

Our family tradition is putting up the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving. This year, we are doing things a little different since it is my first holiday as a single mom. My friends gave us a tree and we are making new decorations each day, so it is a totally homemade decorated tree! The kids are excited each night as we add a new ornament that they make! It helps out my budget and they are having a blast!
