  • The Sudberry’s on the Scottish Highlands
    By R.M. Ballantyine
Accident-prone Mr. Sudberry and family, from London, vacation in Scotland for a summer. Hilarity ensues. This book is a HUGE favorite for many families!
  • In School and Out
    By Oliver Optic
Can Richard Grant, spoiled by his father’s wealth, overcome those who stand in his way of becoming a young man of honor and integrity?
  • The Doctor’s Daughter
    By Sophie May
One of our personal family favorites and also widely popular, The Doctor’s Daughter follows Marian Prescott from the age of twelve to twenty. Similar to Anne of Green Gables, but we found it both funnier and more absorbing!
  • Rich and Humble
    By Oliver Optic
The prequel to In School and Out (above). Richard’s father is arrested for a fraud he did not commit. How are his children to clear his name and restore the family honor?

Short Stories: (Partial list)

  • A London Fireman’s Night Of It
  • The Poetry Machine (Could this have been the precursor to modern computers???)
  • Aunt Abby’s Diamond Ring
  • Boys’ Housekeeping (Funny!)

Cheap Summer Fun

Let’s continue in our Time2Educate Series, written by resident blogger and homeschool director Mandi!

Summer is a great time to teach your kids lots of things by having Fun!  (Make sure to check out the list of Summer Reading Programs HERE)

Here are some websites with Summer Fun Ideas for kids of all ages:

  • KidSource Online:   This website is new to me but has such great ideas.  They give ways to keep your children learning through everyday activities like looking through newspapers, watching the weather, and going to the grocery store.
  • Scholastic:  Traditional-schoolers and Homeschoolers alike know the name “Scholastic.”  They offer tons of ways to keep your children reading through the summer.  Don’t limit yourself to the “Parent” portions of their site.  You have access to most of the “teacher” sections as well and they can be a goldmine for ideas!
  • FamilyEducation.com:  This site gives ways to help your children “not forget” all of those things they have worked so hard to remember this year!  They offer easy, printable lessons to guide you and your child through things that they have learned.
  • WAHM – WorkAtHomeMom:  This mommy blogger is budget conscious as she gives ideas for inexpensive summer projects and other fun ideas to keep your children learning through the summer.
  • FamilyFun:  This Disney affiliate is not new to most of us but shouldn’t be forgotten.  I have used so many of their ideas!  FamilyFun.com will be sure to get your family thinking of great ideas for the entire summer!

Tell us what websites or other sources you go to for ideas!

Don’t be afraid to make goals for your children, your family, and you for the summer!

  • Race your kids to read! Whoever finishes their book list first gets to pick the game for game night!
  • Have each family member pick one new skill to learn and have a “Talent Contest” at the end of the summer.  Invite family friends and other family members to join or just come to enjoy the show!
  • Pick out a short play and have each family member memorize a part to be recited together at an end of summer picnic.  (For the little one’s, start with the 3 little pigs.  Help them make masks to match their parts!
  • Have each person in your family learn about a different local monument.  Take a city tour to the monuments and have the new “expert” teach everyone else about it!  You learn and retain more when you teach a subject to someone else!!

What fun, education things have you done with your family?

Time 2 Educate: 5 FREE Scholastic Children’s Books + other book resources

What’s the most important resource for teaching your children?
Books! Here are a few ways to improve your home library.

Scholastic and Kumon:   Get up to 5 FREE books! These two companies have come together to offer a way for your family to be awarded up to 5 FREE books by completing activity sheets according to your child’s age.  Complete 1 sheet and get 2 books or complete 2 sheets and get 5!

  • Go HERE to PRINT the Activity Sheets and Redemption Form.
  • Have your child complete the “Activities.”
  • Fill out the Redemption Form and check the books you would like to receive.
  • Send the Activity Sheets and Redemption Form to the address on the forms and sit back and relax!
  • Fine Print:  Only 5 FREE books per household.  Your child must complete Activity Sheets from the same age  level.  For example, if your child completes the age 7-9 reading sheet, they must also complete the age 7-9 math sheet.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library: Get a FREE Book EVERY MONTH from birth until your child is 5!  Dolly Parton has teamed up with affiliates nationwide to provide a book every month for your child as a way to encourage literacy.  Eligibility is determined by your county and state.  Go HERE to find out if your area is covered and sign up!

Library Used Book Sales: Almost every library system has some sort of used book sale.  Some libraries even have a standard location at their facility for discarded books for sale.  Contact your local library for their used book sales.

Used Book Stores: If you love books and have never been to a used book store, you are missing out!  Most cities have used book stores big or small.  You can find them by searching on sites like Yellow Pages.com.  One great thing about used book stores is that they have to get their books from somewhere!  Many offer cash or consignment value to books that you bring in.

How do you stock your bookshelves?

Time 2 Teach: Reading Resources

Teaching your child to read does not have to be expensive!  One on-line resource that stands out is Starfall.com.

Starfall.com is a FREE site that provides over 30 lessons that teach reading phonetically.  This program is easy for children to use because it gives limited options on what to click on.   It doesn’t take long for a child to figure out how to navigate to site.  My children have all started using the program on my laptop when they were 3!  The stories are cute and the animation is simple but effective.  Try it out HERE and let me know what you think.

Another fun site is learntoreadfree.com.  This site offers 44 FREE lessons from Montessori Home, Inc.  These lessons focus on 55 words that educators feel should be the first 55 words a child knows to read.   The lessons only take 10 minutes a day in addition to playing some of the sites supporting reading games.  You have to sign up as a parent and you get a summary of what your child has done to keep track of their learning.  Try it HERE.

Other great sites to try:

Remember that one of the most important things about teaching your children to read is to read to them – and the library is always FREE! (unless of course you are like me always carry a fine :) )
