Resurrection Cookies & Jelly Bean Prayer Jar (Teach Kids About Easter)

If you have a little spare time this evening, you may want to make one of these treats with your kiddos to help teach them about Easter in a way that easily grabs little minds and hearts.

I’ve included the recipe for Resurrection cookies below. It’s a great opportunity to hang out with the kiddos, bake cookies, spend time talking to each of them while sharing the Easter story.   Hope you enjoy, we’d love to hear about your family’s experience. If you already have your own traditions in place we’d love to hear yours too.

It’s important to me to teach my kids the true meaning of Easter.   In order for them to hear me, I have to be intentional, otherwise they will hear the Easter message that is all around us.  Think about the last time you walked into a store was Easter stuff was everywhere?   The number of items available is never-ending - toys, candy, kitchen towels, hand soaps, tablecloths, decorations etc… you get the point. The store doesn’t sit back passively hoping that we’ll look for Easter items in their store.   It’s a very intentional plan on their part, they know if we see it, it will grab our attention. In saying that, have I made an effort to create an environment where they can learn the true meaning of Easter on their level?   What message do I want my kids to receive?  When they look back 25 years from now what memories are the most special to them?   Toys come and go, but the things that cannot be measured are those that leave the largest imprint on their lives. To be honest, my children wake up on Easter morning to a basket full of my their favorite healthy snacks candy & chocolate.  I don’t have all the answers, there are all things I want and intend to do but haven’t been consistently successful. Even so, every ounce of effort we make is an investment in their hearts – no matter how small.

Easter Story or “Resurrection” Cookies

Things you’ll need:
1 cup whole pecans                                     1 tsp. vinegar
3 egg whites                                                 pinch salt
1 cup sugar                                                   zipper baggie
wooden spoon                                             tape
Bible

  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees (this is important – don’t wait until you’re half done with the recipe!)
  2. Place pecans in zipper baggie & let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces.
    - Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldiers.  Read John 19:1-3
  3. Let each child smell the vinegar.  Put 1 tsp. vinegar into mixing bowl.
    - Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, He was given vinegar to drink.  Read John 19:28-30.
  4. Add egg whites to vinegar.
    - Eggs represent life.  Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life.  Read John 10:10-11.
  5. Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand.  Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl.
    - Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27
  6. So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing.  Add 1 cup sugar.
    - Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us.  He wants us to know and belong to Him.  Read Psalms 34:8 & John 3:16.
  7. Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12-15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed.
    - Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus.  Read Isaiah 1:18 & John 3:1-3.
  8. Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper covered cookie sheet.
    - Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60.
  9. Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF.  Give each child a piece of tape and seat the oven door.
    - Explain that Jesus’ tomb was sealed.  Read Matthew 27:65-66.
  10. GO TO BED!
    - Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight.  Jesus’ followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed.  Read John 16:20 – 22

On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie.  Notice the cracked surface & take a bite.  The cookies are hollow!  On the first Easter, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty.  Read Matthew 28:1-9 & Rejoice!

Jelly Bean Jar

Fill a jar with jelly beans and attach this poem using ribbon. (Click HERE to download poem)
Red is for the blood He gave. Green is for the grass He made.
Yellow is for the sun so bright. Orange is for the edge of night.
Black is for the sins we made. White is for the grace He gave.
Purple is for His hour of sorrow. Pink is for a new tomorrow.
And handful of jelly beans, Colorful and sweet,
Is a prayer, a promise, A loved one’s treat!
Happy Resurrection Sunday!

Here are 3 different designs here for The Jelly Bean Prayer.  This sounds super easy and mess free!!    Thanks Mama Jenn.
