Between my husband and four boys and the big-eating that goes on around here, one of the cheapest and best-loved dinners I can make is Taco Night.  Or Enchilada Night.  Or Quesadilla Night.  Or Chicken Fajita Night…you get the picture.  But I can’t tell you how many times I’ve got my meat browning and I reach up to the spice cabinet for taco seasoning, only to realize I’m out.  ARRGGHH!!

And that’s not all-  I am sick of paying $1 for a tiny packet of taco seasoning, and those things hardly EVER go on sale!  So for this week’s Pantry Cooking Saturday, I’m sharing a recipe for Homemade Taco Seasoning.  I got this one off of Allrecipes because it has 5 Stars- rated by over 1100 people.  It looks like a good basic recipe- and of course you can alter it for your family according to taste!  If this turns out well, I can already imagine cute little shakers of Taco Seasoning with little homemade tags….Christmas Presents!!!!!

Basic Recipe:

(Quadrupled from the original found on Allrecipes, to make it worth the effort!)

  • 1/4 cup chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon black pepper

2-3 Tablespoons of this is about equivalent to one packet of seasoning.  This will make enough to last you a few dinners, depending on how much you use each time.  Alter to taste.  You can find another version for this recipe HERE - I really like hers as well!

*A good place to buy cheap spices in bulk is Wal-Mart or Wholesale/Salvage Grocery Stores
