DIY: Give An Old Vase A New Look

Ready to change up your decorating for the Season?  You don’t have to go out and buy all new pieces, give some of your older ones a facelift!

We got this red vase right after we got married 17 years ago. While I still think it’s pretty, it doesn’t really match with our new color scheme. Instead of reds, greens, tans, and yellows, we are redoing the downstairs of our house with grey and white and a couple of accent colors like turquoise.

After having the same colors for so long I was ready for a change and am really loving it. My husband recently repainted our foyer to this beautiful grey color you see in the background.  Instead of going out and buying all new decorative pieces, I thought I’d try my hand with some spray paint. The worse thing that could happen is that it would look terrible and I’d have to trash it. Thankfully, it turned out fantastic and cost way less than it would have to buy a new vase.

I bought this spray paint at Lowe’s for less than $5. I wanted turquoise as an accent color to match a rug I found at Target for my entry door. I’ve included the rug in some of the images below so you can see how well the paint and rug matched.

First, I grabbed one of these handy dandy cardboard display boxes my husband had used to carry out our groceries at ALDI. Since I didn’t want to paint our front yard turquoise I thought it was a great place to start. Also, I am crazy messy when it comes to paint. So, taking it outside was definitely the best choice for me. It’s really so simple, just spray the exposed surface allow to dry, then turn.

Once the first coat dried, I stood the vase up and sprayed a second coat to make sure I coated the entire surface of the vase.

Make sure to paint inside the top of the vase as well, otherwise it will stick out like a sore thumb.

Don’t you think it turned out amazing? Excuse the paper towel the vase is sitting on, I just couldn’t wait to take a picture of it for you and didn’t want to chance getting turquoise spray paint on our newly painted white table. I’ll have to post a step-by-step of how we have repainted several furniture pieces lately to match our new color scheme. This is the rug I told you about beside the vase. I think it matches so nicely!

Couldn’t resist one more picture. I absolutely love the new colors, my house is starting to feel so cozy. Such a nice change from all the red.
