Couponing for the Rest of Us

Time 2 $ave: Becoming a Purposeful Giver

time2give_time2save[1]jpeg2

If you’d been around for any amount of time, then you have heard how important it is to us to live a lifestyle of giving.  No matter how many times I have the privilege of giving to others, it still gives me cold chills out of sheer excitement!  God’s word is true, it is better to give than to receive!  It’s contagious, the amazing feeling of having the privilege to help someone else in their time of need never grows old.

Acts 20:35

Good News Translation (GNT)

35 I have shown you in all things that by working hard in this way we must help the weak, remembering the words that the Lord Jesus himself said,
There is more happiness in giving than in receiving.

First, you might be surprised to hear – we don’t LOVE COUPONS. We don’t wake up every morning excited to cut up coupons or jump on every deal that we can find. Simply put – couponing just happened to be the tool that brought hope to our family’s finances. Most importantly it has afforded us the incredible opportunity to give into the lives of others in ways we never imagined.

When I say giving I’m not referring to giving just at Thanksgiving or Christmas.  You see, as we learned how to coupon effectively a light came on one day.  Every week there are items that are free or nearly free at grocery stores and drug stores.  What if we started looking for items each week specifically to give?  We began to look beyond our own family’s needs for opportunities to bless others.

Now, we have become purposeful givers.  It has become a lifestyle that is just as important to us as shopping for our family’s needs.

To give you an idea how much of an influence you can be I’ve listed items just from Monday’s posts that would make great donation items.

Prayer Requests, Anyone?

God works in even small things – like this – and I just felt that I should write this post today…

The last few weeks, so many people we know have been struck by personal tragedy, illness, relationship troubles, and financial crises.  We know that many of you in the Time2Save community are also struggling with hard stuff in your lives right now.   And while we always pray for you as a community, we’d like to open this post up for you to give voice to those things.  You can simply leave your prayer requests as a comment below  – and you can always post prayer requests on our Facebook Wall.  We have some powerful prayer warriors out there!

Let us and others in the Time2Save community lift you up in prayer.  Give someone the chance to speak encouragement to you – or look for someone that you can encourage.

Join Us In Prayer for the Tornado Victims.

Photo from a front porch in Cleveland, TN yesterday.

After yesterday’s three rounds of massive tornados (160 in all) – the death toll is up to 213, and rising.

Over a million people are without power  - and thousands are injured.  Temporary morgues have been set up, and parking lots have been transformed into command headquarters for donations.

You can see footage of a tornado going through Alabama HERE

We are still in shock, many of us finding out that more and more people we know have lost their homes as the day goes on.

I ask that you join us in prayer for those affected by this storm – and I personally would like to offer God praise that my family is unharmed.

Please comment and tell the Time2Save Community what you need to pray for, or what you would like to give praise for.  We’ll be checking all day – and lifting you up in prayer!!

Also – if you have a story you want to share, or know of a place to drop off donations – leave that in the comment section as well for those who are itching to jump in and help!!!

*New Feature* Couponing at 18: Elizabeth’s Journey

Here’s a different take on couponing that you don’t hear about often!

We’d like to introduce you to a new regular feature you’ll be seeing on Time2Save. I want to let our guest do most of the talking – so I won’t say much, save that we met her just recently and she is such a sweet blessing of a young woman we asked her to share with you. We’d like to bring her into your lives in a small way each week – as she takes us on a journey with her.

Hey everyone, my name is Elizabeth and I am so excited to be able to share with you.

I am eighteen years old, a full time college student, and I work.   However, family comes first for me. This is why I decided to find a way to help my parents out. Like almost everyone my parents are struggling financially and every little bit helps. I learned about a coupon seminar from my sister-in-law and I thought this would be a great way to help out.

I arrived at the coupon seminar very excited, because I knew this would be an amazing chance to help my parents save money. I learned that it is possible to save hundreds of dollars monthly by using coupons. Which to me is so amazing!!! Okay, I’m off to try what I have learned so far. Wish me luck!  Thank you for reading my blog, and I will keep you posted on my journey through the couponing world.

Your thrifty friend,

Elizabeth

Time2Save & Time2Give Reader Testimonies!

As a community, we try to encourage each other not just in our struggle to save money – but also in our calling to give to others in need.  When you’ve come from a place of need into a place where you are able to give – you know what a joy it is!  So I have a few “Saving” and “Giving” testimonies to share with you today:

Terri French posted this on our Facebook Wall:

“Woohoo!!!! First time shopping while couponing. Spent $102 for $301 worth of product.”

Rose Thompson Smith got all this for $3.24!  Way to go Rose!

And now for a story we received from a sweet lady this week (Grab a Kleenex!):

“This last Sunday in our life group meeting (some call it Sunday School), a lady told us about an unchurched family, where the dad has lost his job, they have no car, and there are 4 children ranging from 8 to 16.  School is about to start and then I actually found out that the oldest son and his dad were sharing the same pair of shoes.  It was through the love of Jesus Christ and the Ministry that you have brought to some of our church ladies that enabled us on Thursday morning to take 2 boxes of slightly used clothes and 2 boxes of food and staples, and school supplies to help this family.  My husband said that they were so appreciative.  I would have never thought 3 weeks ago that we would be able to do this.  God has truly blessed us.  Thanks again for all you have taught me.   The bible says that before we start telling, to start by showing.  I believe that we truly got to show Gods love this week.”

Sincerely,
Kathy Smith

Time 2 Give – Adopt a US Soldier

One of the main reasons we strive to save money (and teach others) is so that we have the resources to GIVE to others more freely.  Reader Jenny wrote in a couple days ago to share a wonderful opportunity for giving, please take a moment to read her letter:

“I would like to put an idea out there.  I know that so many of us get food and supplies for free… I have a solution to help others!  I have officially adopted a US. Soldier.  I don’t know if anyone else out there is familiar with this but it is a wonderful program.  You sign up here (http://www.adoptaussoldier.org/) and in a few days, they send you the name and address of your soldier… you can send them letters, care packages, etc…

I recently sent mine some free deodorant and body wash (he is currently in Afghanistan), as well as some snacky foods.  It is a great way to support our military men and women… my soldier said his package was a “godsend”… Thanks so much and hope you have a great day!”

THANK YOU JENNY!  This is a wonderful way to help someone far away home by sending a little bit of comfort in a box.  I know many of you have a special place in your heart for a soldier – think of them as you begin to put a box together with love.

NOTE: Get free bodywash & shampoo at CVS this week, see my post HERE

Thank You from the Quinton Family

Awhile back, we had a chance to reach out and help a family in need.  (Read about them HERE.) The Quinton family suffered tragedy after attending a workshop a few months ago and we wanted to pitch in to lend them a hand with something that is hard to do in the midst of sorrow – practical everyday things, like grocery shopping.  You all were wonderful in helping with this outreach, and we just received a touching letter from the family we’d like to share:

To My Brothers & Sisters from Time 2 Save:
There are just no words that can express our gratitude & thankfulness for what you all have done. The love and support we have received from ones we have never met has deeply touched our hearts.  We never thought that our family would be thought of and loved and cared for the way we have been.  I know, for myself, when I came to the workshop here in Dalton, I was so excited about what we had learned, I wanted to share it with so many.  I knew we didn’t know a lot, but what we did know we needed to try to share so their families could be helped.  This never got to happen because of Hunter’s accident, however, I have told everyone about your ministry.  I am in the food ministry at my church, we cook for families for funerals and I thought this could just be an extension.  We could help so many others.  I never thought it would be us that would be ministered to.
God put me at that workshop for the specific purpose of becoming closer to each and every one of you .  You will never know what it meant to have the load lifted of not having to shop.  I physically and mentally just could not and God sent all of you to minister to us.  You all, I know will be truly blessed.
It was amazing, as we put up groceries it was exactly what we needed.  We had an overabundance of some things and felt the need to give to someone else as well.  So not only did you bless us, you also blessed someone else as well.  Thank you so much!  Those words seem so inadequate but I pray God will allow you to feel the love and appreciation we have for each and everyone of you!
I don’t know how this will get to everyone, but God does and I know we don’t know everyone’s name, but God does.  And truly, I love you, our family loves you and thanks you from the bottom of our hearts.  This ministry will grow abundantly…anything does as long as God is the center of it and I can certainly say I believe God is the center of this ministry!
Thank you ALL!
The Quinton Family

Well, friends, the old year has slipped away once again and a new one begun.  In thinking back over the past year, we’re so happy for the chances we had to bless others when we were blessed.  Because really, that’s one of the most satisfying parts about being frugal and shopping strategically with coupons – the unexpected ability to give more to others!
Click on the post title to read more and enter the  giveaway!

I can think of a few times personally that I was so glad I could fill a few bags of groceries from my stockpile to hand to a friend in need – groceries that otherwise would have been a real hardship to give away.  I know Kelly & Kasey have their own stories, and I am pretty sure you have some of your own, too….

Please comment below – or email us – to share a time YOU were able to be a blessing or minister to someone else as a result of being a couponer!

Hopefully, your stories will inspire others who are becoming successful savers and show them how they can not only make time to save, but time to GIVE in the year 2010.

Oh yeah – I almost forgot!  Anyone who emails or comments to share with us all will be entered to win a Gift Certificate for ALL 3 WORKSHOPS (*A $40 Value) for yourself or a friend!
(Entries must be received by Monday at NOON)
