Here are just a couple of pics from the Do-It-Herself Workshop.  Home Depot even gave away a gas grill and the containers we made during the workshop!  The store manager presented me with a hand painted Home Depot apron.  It was such a kind gesture, and the apron was painted beautifully.

My kids had baseball and softball games all weekend, so we didn’t make it to Home Depot to pick up our supplies until Sunday afternoon. It was raining like crazy, and I don’t mean just a little bit.  There were flood watches everywhere, first time I’ve ever picked out planters in the garden department under an umbrella.  Otherwise, I was planning on filming what I was buying but we were a wet mess.

The kids helped me pick out their favorite Succulents, after looking at every single plant several times over (no exaggeration y’all it took forever). Love these sweet little hands.  If it would have been up to them, we would have bought every single one!

Below I have included a list of supplies you’ll need to create a Succulent Garden.  We bought a beautiful large blue planter to use as a centerpiece on the table on our screened in porch.  Then, a smaller planter for the kids bathroom.

You’ll need:

• Succulent Plants
• Cactus, Palm, and Citrus Soil
• Polished Stone or Pea Gravel
• Planter/Container

If you’re looking for a decent deal on mulch – most of the sales were earlier this Spring and already over with   However – Lowe’s has their Premium Mulch 2 Cu Ft Bags (including red and black colored mulch) on sale at 4/$10 or just $2.50 each through today (5/13!)  I picked up some of the black mulch yesterday and it looks GREAT! (Not weirdly black as I’d feared – See the picture below with my new flowers )

Another great option (if you have a truck) is to look in the classifieds or ask around locally for those offering mulch by the tractor bucket.  I could get a tractor load of mulch for just $10 – IF I only had a pickup truck to haul it away!!

DIY Sharpie Mug: Frugal Gift for Teachers!

I’ve been batting around the idea of making a DIY Sharpie Mug for awhile, and with Teacher Appreciation week upon us – it seemed like the perfect time to make this project!

With four kids in school, I’m always looking for frugal gift ideas for teachers who work so hard to teach (and love on) my babies, day in and day out.  I wanted to make something special for them from the whole class – like a mug with all the kids names on it.

I found these great matte-finish black mugs at Rite-Aid for $1 this week, and I just knew these would be the PERFECT start for these teacher mugs!  Doesn’t it remind you of a chalkboard??

First of all – if you’ve read the comments on other DIY Sharpie Mug posts floating around the web – you’ll know that regular old Sharpies don’t stay put once the mug is washed.  Believe me – I found this out the hard way after stenciling in a beautiful design on my mug, baking it for 30 minutes and then scrubbing the design off immediately afterwards.   Live and learn!  The special paint sharpies I used haven’t budged, even when I attacked them with my pot scrubber!

For this project you’ll need:

• Oil Based Paint Sharpies (I only needed the white for this project, but I went ahead and bought this whole 5-Pack for just $13.  I’m sure I’ll be making enough gifts to make it totally worth it)
• Coffee Mug (Check the Dollar Tree or the Dollar Aisle of most stores to find cheap ones!)

DIY Sharpie Mug Directions:

1. Wash the mug thoroughly and let dry
2. Have each child sign the mug with the paint sharpie and date it on the bottom
3. Gift it along with a Starbucks giftcard or some yummy chocolate inside

A DIY Sharpie Mug is also a great place to show off your child’s artwork.  Commission your own set of “hand-painted” artisan mugs from your favorite little artists!  I bought an extra mug for myself and asked my James to draw me a picture.  He knows I love flowers – so he drew a picture of one for me

This would also be great for Grandparent’s Day!

And if you have a steady hand – or some stencils lying around – you can make a fun graphic design on your mug – like this feather I stenciled.  Other ideas for designs:

My kids are going through the frozen treats like crazy now that the weather is warm – so I thought I’d make some Homemade Pudding Pops with them!  WhenFlavor-Ices and smoothies start to lose their appeal, try these easy, cheap, and delicious pudding pops using paper cups and a spoon.

You only need 5 things for this recipe – and it’s pretty inexpensive to make!  You can also use lowfat milk for a healthier version.

I made chocolate pudding pops first, and then my kids requested vanilla for the next batch.  These were great – and we made them even more fun by adding a plop of Smuckers Fudge Ice Cream topping in the center for a yummy suprise!  We stirred it in just a bit so it was a swirl  – like Fudge Ripple

I’m re-posting this tutorial I wrote previously on how to make homemade firestarters because camping season is HERE again!

This weekend I took my 4 boys out for our first ever family camping trip.  It was all I could’ve hoped for – they were thrilled to cook hotdogs over the campfire on sticks, make S’mores, tell silly ghost stories, and listen to mom play old John Denver songs on the guitar.   We swam in the lake until we were exhausted, and finally cuddled up in our tiny 4 person tent together while I lay awake hoping no critters would come looking for leftovers.

It was wonderful – memories they’ll have forever  – just like I do from when I went camping as a kid with my parents.  There was one thing, though, that I wished I had remembered to bring along – something to make the all-important campfire even easier to get going: My HomeMade Camp Fire Starters.

As some of you know, I was a girl scout for many years. But this particular trick I learned from my brother (an Eagle Scout) during his boy scout days. It’s a little recipe for homemade fire starters, useful for taking camping with you, or just for a little backyard bonfire when tinder and lighter fluid aren’t at hand.

Step 1: You’ll need a cardboard egg carton and some of your old candles.

Step 2: Break up the candles into smaller pieces and melt over low in your oldest, yuckiest skillet or pot.

Step 3: Get the dryer lint out of the lint trap, or if you’re like me, get the whole bag of dryer lint you’ve been saving for this specific purpose.   It’s very flammable, and smells nice to boot.

Step 4: Pack the dryer lint very tightly into each egg receptacle.

Step 5: Spoon the wax carefully over top the dryer lint, about 3 spoons per wad.

Step 6: Let cool completely, if I’m in a hurry I stick mine in the freezer for a bit, and then cut out your fire-starters.

Just toss one or two of these under your pile of firewood and light the cardboard.  It will stay burning long enough to get the wood to catch fire really well.

You can also make a “bunson burner” for heating up food/canned goods by cutting a 1″ wide strip of cardboard in a long length.  Roll it into an old tuna can until it’s made a tightly packed spiral.  Drip wax over the cardboard and you’re done!

I bought this to hold my broom, mop and various other objects that used to reside on the floor between the wall and the fridge. I had to switch the direction of the slide, which was very easy and included in the instructions. I’ve had it up for over a month and I have no complaints. Slides smoothly, holds everything (really everything! the 2 little hooks are great for holding my hand broom and dustpan) and keeps that space much more organized than it ever was before. I love it!

Really needed something to organize a narrow but deep utility space (23″ x 48″). Mounted this fairly high to keep the brooms, etc up off the floor – it is really great because you can actually put your tools in at whatever height you choose, and the ball grip will just hold it in place no matter what. None of my boys are into giving “sweet” Valentines to their classes – they’re much more interested in funny Valentine cards!  To that end, I’ve been looking at doing a really “cool guy” approved Valentine Mustache Card for my older kids classrooms.  I found this cute Free Printable Valentine’s Card above – which is adorable but may waste a TON of ink

Valentine’s Day Craft for Kids:  Heart-Shaped Crayon

If you’re already thinking ahead of Valentine’s Day Crafts to do with your kids – you might want to start collecting old crayons!  I don’t know about you – but I am ALWAYS finding stray crayon pieces around our house, in the van, under the couch cushions – I think this is the perfect Valentine’s Day Craft for us!   Basically, you just melt old crayons in a heart-shaped mold and pop them out, voila!  Heart-Shaped Crayons!  They’d be great to give out to classmates – or if you’re a teacher, a great gift for your kiddos!

Heart-Shaped Crayon Instructions:

1. Remove wrappers from crayons and break into small pieces *Optional – Add glitter!
2. Fill silicon mold and put in 300 degree oven for 15 minutes or until melted
3. Let cool and Pop out (Scroll down for classroom gifting ideas)

I went on Amazon – because I am definitely doing these this year – and found a GREAT deal on a silicone heart mold – turns out, most of the reviews are about making heart-shaped crayons and how perfectly it worked!  YAY!  If you want to make big heart crayons, check out the Wilton Mini Heart Mold instead.

I purchased this small heart pan for a craft project in my classroom. We crushed old crayolas, mixed the colors as desired in the pan cups and melted the crayolas in a toaster oven. When cooled the colored hearts popped out easily and were a hit for Valentine’s Day. The pan cleaned up beautifully.

Valentine Quotes for Crayon Notes:

If you plan to give these out to your child’s class for Valentine’s Day, you can stick a small piece of foam tape on the back of the crayon and stick to a 3″ piece of cardstock or posterboard, cut out in a circle or heart shape.  Write a cute little Valentine quote on the paper, here are some suggestions:

• You’re as pretty as a picture!
• Valentine, You make my heart melt

Here are some simple directions for how to make a flurry of pretty paper snowflakes – using Coffee Filters!   This would be a fun way to pass the afternoon this Christmas Eve – my kids had lots of fun making theirs earlier this week!

I love using coffee-filters rather than paper because it saves you the step of having to cut off the corners – also, most people already have a stack of them on hand and ready to go.

Making paper snowflakes is a Christmas tradition in the Miles household – every year we spend an afternoon snipping our snowflakes and then we tape them to the living room window as part of our holiday decorating.  Because it so rarely snows here in Cleveland, TN, we just have to make our own!

The steps for making a paper snowflake are very easy – your children can make them unassisted once you show them how:

1. Fold a coffee filter in half, and then in half again, and then in half one more time until you have a triangle shape. (You can do more, but it becomes difficult to cut)
   .
2. Using scissors, snip out shapes all around your triangle.  Snipping the point off in an interesting way will give you a cool center to your snowflake.  Snipping around the curved bottom of the triangle is what will make your edge frilly.
   .
3. Make sure you don’t accidentally cut all the way through your triangle lengthwise or your snowflake fall apart into tiny sections!  (Cutting it in half horizontally will just give you a little bitty snowflake.)
   .
4. Unfold your snowflake carefully, and use a heavy book to flatten it for a couple hours before hanging.

Here’s a picture of our snowflakes hanging up on our living room window – they don’t quite camouflage the very GREEN  and UN-Christmasy grass outside – maybe we need a whole bunch more snowflakes hanging up there to do the trick

I’m always on the lookout for Frugal Christmas Gift ideas.  Although I do lots of holiday baking – somehow my kids manage to eat most of the spoils – leaving me very little in the way of giftable treats. Being the procrastinator that I am, I usually find myself looking around my house for something that I can turn into a last-minute frugal Christmas Gift.  Hence the birth of Lazy Girl’s Cooke Mix in a Jar! 

Now I won’t lie to you – this is 100% CHEATING, and yes – I admit that this makes me a baking traitor.  But as long as the cookies are yummy and noone is the wiser, I don’t see a problem with a little “Semi-Homemade”

First – you’ll need a mason jar and a bag of cookie mix.  I had picked up some cheap Betty Crocker cookie mix at Bi-Lo this past week for $.80 after coupons.

Pour the cookie mix into the jar – and then fill the top with chocolate chunks, granola, M&M’s or some other candy to give it that layered look.

Also – I would recommend using a mix that looks a little more rustic than sugar cookies – like Granola Chocolate Chip!

To make it “Gifty” – Add an easy bow by tying a ribbon around a rubber band or hair tie.  Stretch the rubber hand around the mouth of your jar.

Tuck a candy cane into the rubber band for an extra bit of festive flair!

Next – copy out the instructions for how to bake the cookies from the back of the bag.  I wrote mine on the back of an index card, and folded it in half.  I trimmed it into a pretty small square so it could be taped to the back of a gift tag.

String a gift tag around the jar with the instructions taped to the back – and Voila!  Instant holiday baking gift!

Have you ever been printing several things when suddenly one item you were printing gets stuck?  You go to investigate and there’s one print job that has an ERROR – and it won’t allow anything else to print.  ARRGGHH!!  I’ve been there too.  So of course – you click “Delete” to cancel the troublesome print job – and it proceeds to delete until eternity…  It says “Deleting….” but it never actually moves on from that point.

It happens about once a week for me – especially when I’m getting coupons ready to go grocery shopping and I have about 7 tabs open printing coupons from various sites.  Inevitably – one will get stuck and all the rest of my coupons won’t print because of it.  I used to just shut everything down, unplug my printer and cut my losses – but here’s the solution I found awhile back that’s worked every time.

How to Delete or Cancel a print job by stopping and restarting your print spooler:

What is a Print Spooler?  Your print spooler is what makes all your coupons wait in line, going in the order of when you told them to print.  No one can cut line and kick out the troublemaker who’s stuck – unless you stop your spooler and then start it fresh.  Here’s how to Stop and Restart your Print Spooler.

1. First, click your Windows Start Menu and click Control Panel.
2. Choose System & Security
3. Choose Administrative Tools
4. Scroll down to Double-click Services
5. Find Print Spooler 
6. Right Click Print Spooler and choose STOP.  Give it a second and then right click again to choose START.

You should now hear the joyful hum of your printer starting back up!  Here’s a picture tutorial – just follow the arrows:

Now that Halloween is over, you’ll be able to find some awesome deals on costumes.  Costumes make great gifts, they bring out kids’ imaginations and get them away from a glowing screen for awhile.  Make a costume chest and you’re kids will always have a go-to place to let their imaginations run wild.

One of my kids’ favorite past-times is playing dress-up.  They’re boys, and so for them that means dressing up as ninjas, pirates, knights, dragons, cowboys, cops and robbers – and of course, every superhero known to man.  My niece’s dress-up box is full of princess gowns, ballerina tutus, feathery boas and sparkly wands.  It’s all a far cry from my own childhood dress-up box, which was full of mom’s hand-me-down 70′s jumpsuits, and a few maternity dresses.  Still, it was my favorite thing to play and I love dressing up still!

When I was a teenager my costume chest underwent a glorious transformation….  I started biking to yard sales with my own money, and soon found out that crazy old prom dresses could be had for a song.  Any given Saturday, you might see me pedaling back home with my army surplus backpack overflowing with tulle and lace – thus signalling the start of my career as a costume hoarder!  I filled an old cedar chest with all my costumey finds – squirreling away every puffy satin sleeve and ribbon-covered ruffle with my one-day daughters in mind.  As you know, those daughters ended up being a herd of smelly but beautiful boys, and so I had to start collecting all over again.  Besides yard sales, my favorite way to fill their costume chest by far is Post- Halloween Clearance sales.

First you’ll need a sturdy chest!  A sturdy one is best – as it may get battered and beaten up over the years.   You may get lucky and find one at a yardsale or the thrift store.   The bigger the better – though if your space is limited, you may want to choose one that can double as a bench.  Here are some options I found on Amazon that seem a decent price:

You can score costumes for 75% OFF, as well as fun accessories like light sabres, swords, tiaras, wigs, and wands.  Stock up on gear for all the usual suspects like superheros, princesses, dancers and firefighters, as well as character costumes for the ones they’ll love for a while(Buzz Lightyear and Woody, for instance).

I’ve seen lots of cute pumpkin carving templates online this week.  We are getting our pumpkins this weekend, and plan on carving next week.  I thought I’d share with you what I’ve found!  I’m particularly interested in making cookie cutter pumpkins like those in the image above.  My kiddos are still pretty little, so I think a cookie cutter is a better option than a carving knife.  If you are interested in trying out a cookie cutter pumpkin I’ve included a couple of tips below that I’ll be following.  If you’d rather carve your pumpkin I’ve included cute templates below.

The thoughts of trying to carve all those circles makes my eyes cross. I’m loving the cookie cutter technique!! Looks easy enough!

Cookie Cutter Pumpkins

• You’ll want to use small sturdy cookie cutters preferably made out of stainless steel.
• Prepare the pumpkin like you normally would to carve.  (Cut circle around stem, and clean out the insides) 
• Hold a cookie cutter firmly on the outside of the pumpkin
• Use a rubber mallet or some other kind of hard surface to tap the cookie cutter through the skin of the pumpkin.
• Repeat in a pattern of your choice, mix it up by using different shapes and sizes.
• Insert candle, light and enjoy!

I made this simple elegant centerpiece several years ago.  I’ve gotten so many compliments on it, I thought you might enjoy a DIY tutorial.  Enjoy!!

Here’s what you need.

• 1 Large Grapevine Wreath
• 2 Medium Sized Grapevine Wreaths
• 3 – 5 pieces of felt to cover bottoms of grapevine wreaths
• Fall Foliage Stems
• Styrofoam Little Pumpkins, gourds, etc. (I bought a pack of varying sizes and colors at Hobby Lobby).
• Glue Gun
• 1 Large Hurricane Vase
• 2 Medium Sized Hurricane Vases
• 3 Candle Holders
• 3 Candles
• Florist Wire

1. So that the wreath doesn’t scratch your table, you’ll want to glue felt to the bottom. I choose brown felt, since it was close to the color of my table. You’ll also notice, that the felt circle is a tad smaller than the grapevine wreath. Otherwise, the unsightly felt would stick out. You can always go back and trim the felt once it’s glued down.

2. Divide the Fall Foliage Stems and begin inserting in a circular pattern around each grapevine wreath covering the sides and tops. I started around the sides, then worked my way up to the top. Make sure to vary the color/sizes of foliage. Then, I went back with a glue gun to make sure that all of the foliage was secure. (You’ll attach the wreaths to each other later).

3.  Arrange the foliage covered wreaths in a straight line with the large wreath in the middle and medium sized ones on each side.  Use florist wire to attach together.

4. Then, glue the Styrofoam pumpkins and gourds between the wreaths (on top of where you wired the wreaths together) and around the edges.  This really helps “fill” in the centerpiece so that it doesn’t look like three circles attached together.  It adds depth and continuity to make it really pretty.

Add hurricane vases, candlesticks and candles!  Congratulations!  You’ve created a beautiful fall centerpiece that you can enjoy for years to come.
