Jamie here, I don’t know what your finances are like at this time of year – but if you’re struggling to buy the kids new backpacks (on top of the shoes, clothes, and supplies they need) I want to share a tip with you. I make my kids wait until the first or second week in September for new backpacks.
Gasp! I know – I’m a mean, mean mommy – what amount of therapy can ever heal them from such shame! Just kidding – my kids actually are FINE with this. When else would they hear the words “Choose any one you want – don’t worry about the pricetag!”
Last year I just couldn’t swing new backpacks before school started – there were too many other expenses pouring in. SO we waited. When Target finally marked backpacks down around the first week of September – we pounced. (Of course, if you need a new backpack pronto – we found some surprisingly low prices here!)
To give you an idea of what to expect, Embark Backpacks were $4.50 (Reg $15) and the Puma ProCat backpacks were only $12 (Reg $40). My little one was SO excited to pick out this regularly pricey Puma Procat backpack. (I later saw on a magazine cover that it’s the same one Gwyneth Paltrow’s kid has! :) )
In addition to backpacks – other back to school stuff is also on clearance come early September. Think lunchboxes, dorm room decor (aka – stuff for my kids’ rooms) and patio furniture.
Here’s my post from early September last year with some goodies we found:
I’d told my kids at the beginning of the school year that they needed to wait on new backpacks until the prices went down – and boy am I glad I did! The entire wall of backpacks was 70% OFF so they were thrilled when the words “choose any one you want” came out of my mouth
I was BLOWN AWAY by the amount of 70% OFF Clearance I found….
One of the first thing I spotted was a couple Patio Tables for 70% OFF – making them only $20! I don’t need anything glass in the vicinity of my rowdy boys and their friends – so I passed on this one. Right next door to the patio aisle was a wall of backpacks that had me beating a swift path in that direction….
Patio and School Whatnots 70% OFF
Besides Backpacks – a lot of school supplies and lunch kits were on sale as well for 50% – 70% OFF. This BYOB Neoprene Lunch Bag by Built was only $3 (Reg $12) – so cute! This RE waste basket was around $1.50 (Reg $5). I also picked up a pack of LEGO Ninjago Pencils for asteal.
Dorm Room Clearance 70% OFF
I wanted to see if there were any more of those great clearance stools or ottomans we posted back here. The Dorm Room stuff I’d picked up last week for 50% OFF was now 70% OFF! That made both of these lamps $5 each, and this cute stool only about $5 as well!
Bedding Clearance 70% OFF too???!!
At this point I thought I’d probably give my husband a heart attack when I came home – but then I also found a King Size Comforter & Shams for only $29.99 (Reg $99.99) and a couple pillows that look nice together for about $7 each! (Reg $24.99) At this price, I just honestly couldn’t walk away. It’s been about 10 years since we got a new comforter – it was time!
All in all I walked away with some awesome deals – the backpacks alone at full price would’ve costwhat I spent on everything else combined.
I’d LOVE to hear what you found in your store – please share in the comments!
